AUSTIN (ALICE 97.3) — A man in Austin, Texas, took cell phone video of a violent road rage incident between two other men wielding a bat and a pole that went viral and even got a special effects treatment that made the weapons look like light sabers.
The confrontation reportedly began after the two drivers made obscene gestures to each other Monday.
After a stoplight turned red, one got out with the bat and tapped on the other driver’s door at the intersection of Slaughter Lane and Interstate 35.
After initially getting out of his still-moving vehicle, the second man put his truck in park, grabbed a long pole from the back of his truck and began swinging.
“You just really see that guy with the bat, going after the other dude,” said Daren Esquiveo, the bystander who recorded the fight. “I was actually thinking that guy was going to pull out a gun right there when he jumped in the car.”
But when the light turned green, the men got back in their cars and left. They were already gone by the time police arrived.
By early Tuesday morning, a pair of videos that added either visual and sound effects to the original clip had surfaced.
The Facebook group Acapella Videos posted a clip with the on-screen video credit “@peiicans” that had added the Imperial March theme from “Star Wars” and visual effects that turned the bat and pole into light sabers. The 12-second clip entitled “Star Wars: The Traffic Jam” had racked up nearly 2 million views and almost 30,000 shares within seven hours.
A second longer clip didn’t have the visual effects, but added “Star Wars” music and the sound effects from a light saber battle.
