The living-room-contest-turned-Jimmy Fallon-skit-turned-tv-show Lip Sync Battle turned out to be a surprisingly awesome idea for a weekly celebrity contest. And tonight’s hour-long season finale had us hoping that a season two is coming soon.
Of course, the match up was one of the best, if not the best, that they’ve had yet. Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson are currently co-stars on Empire, but also co-starred in the classic film Hustle and Flow, and the two clearly have a chemistry.
Which wasn’t to say that Ms. Henson wasn’t trying her damnedest to win. She started out strong, “performing” Mary J. Blige‘s “Just Fine.” And then she brought out Mary J. Blige to lip sync with her. While it’s probably true that Mary J. was more than a bit overqualified for the job — why would you want to give the woman a mic that isn’t plugged in? — it was a funny performance.
Howard, however, followed with one of the most emotional performances the show has seen, a no frills take on Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love To You.”
In a bonus segment, and in a Lip Sync Battle first, the competitors teamed up for a duel performance. The song? Three 6 Mafia’s “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp,” the Oscar-winning song from Hustle and Flow, of course.
