There’s a reason the Queen knighted Sir Patrick Stewart: the man is a walking ball of sunshine underneath a shiny bald exterior.
This morning, by the grace of Q, Stewart participated in his first ever Reddit AMA to a fleet of adoring fans, answering questions pertaining to how the actor maintains his youth, spends his free time, and how he gets about town.
His answers did not disappoint. Here, we gathered some of his big tips on life, love, and really good, kinda weird sandwiches.
Tip #1: Spoil your loved ones
A Reddit user asked him the thoughtful question, “If you could find one rare artifact in the world what would it be and who would you give it to?” Stewart had an adorable response, saying he would find a Sonia Delaunay painting, and “present to my wife [Sunny Ozell] for our imminent second wedding anniversary.” Aww.
Tip #2: Know that having a good work/life balance is the key to youth
One Redditor asked how Stewart manages to stay youthful and happy, even at age 75. In response to this question, Stewart got a little philosophical. “Well the great man Sigmund Freud said the most important things for a happy and long life were love and work and I’ve had a cornucopia of both.”
Tip #3: Trust no one
Stewart, who loves acting in Shakespearean plays, was asked simply, “If you had the ability to ask William Shakespeare one question, what would it be?” Stewart, without missing a beat, replied, ” Prove to me you’re William Shakespeare.”
Stewart responded similarly to a question related to his role in the new animated Seth McFarlane show, “Blunt Talk“, in which he plays a British newscaster who comes to the U.S. When one person asked him what his character might ask his other character on “American Dad” Deputy CIA Director Bullock, he had a cheeky response. “How did an Englishman come to work for the CIA and is it a good idea? And why haven’t the other agents commented on the fact that you are English?” he said. “Maybe they haven’t noticed, in which case they’re not smart enough to work for the CIA.”
Tip #4: Have a good sense of humor
Redditor: Is there any project other than acting you’ve ever wanted to venture in to?
Stewart: Yes! Deep-sea diving and mountaineering. There’s something about going up and down that turns me on.
Tip #5: Be picky with who you kiss
One Reddit user, obviously referring to his notorious bromance with frequent collaborator and BFF Ian McKellen, asked whether late night host Conan O’Brien or McKellen is a better kisser. Stewart replied simply, “Actually, it’s Alan Cumming.”
Tip #6: Be specific about your favorite tastes
Stewart has clear preferences about what he eats and drinks. His favorite tea is Yorkshire Gold, about which he notes, “Any other kind of tea bag needs two bags.” He also adds an aside. “By the way, did you know that I am the man who introduced the concept of the double tea bag to the United States,” he wrote. “Don’t you think that deserves some recognition…A Medal of Honor? And invitation to the White House? Or my own seat on the next space shuttle?”
He also claims his favorite drink is an Oregon Pinot Noir, his favorite cocktail is “a martini with Old Raj gin and very important, one olive,” and his favorite sandwich is one that brings him close to home. “Always, all my life, a favorite, thickly sliced Granny Smith apple on thick, heavily buttered white bread,” he said. “Very healthy and yummy.”
Tip #7: Ride the subway (and the tube)
One Redditor, convinced he or she saw him in New York at a subway station, asked if he ever rides with the rest of New Yorkers. “I use the subway all the time and in London, the Underground,” he said before adding, “Broadway-Lafayette is one of my favorite stations!!!!!!!!!”
Tip #8: Make adventurous fashion choices
If he had to have hair, he would do something fun with it, because obviously. When someone asked what kind of hairstyle he’d sport, he only had one thought: “a mullet.”
