After news broke that a Mountain View man was renting out a tent in his parents’ backyard garden for nearly $1000 per month, we got to wondering, what can you get with that amount in other major U.S. metropolitan areas?
Obviously, you may not want to read any further if you don’t like being disappointed, but if you’re now sturdily bulletproof to the woes of the Bay Area rental crisis, read on.
Here are other places in the U.S. where you can get more bang for your buck in homes with an actual door.
In Lake Stevens, near Seattle, another burgeoning tech hub, you can score a large bedroom with a private bath for $936. It features a desk with a hutch, an actual double bed, and access to an actual working kitchen!
Across the country in Atlanta, you can score a private room in a gorgeous Pinterest-perfect house, complete with a queen size bed, cute vintage furniture and a little work station — all for only $960.
In Tuscon, you can nab this entire 1-bedroom, pet and 420-friendly apartment for only $877 . Besides cable, Internet, a washing machine and of course, an air conditioner, this spot features sweeping views of the desert from an included patio.
If you like a little more space, check out this spot in Dallas County (20 mins from the heart of the city), where you can get your own private room with adjoined balcony, plus access to a game room with a billiards table, a large pool, and laundry.
In Kansas City, home of the barbecue pros, you can stay in your own room in a historic home built in 1899, complete with a huge backyard and fire pit, for just $822.
You can stretch your dollar in Chicago, where for $963 you can stay in an apartment by DePaul University by Lincoln Park.
In Denver you can hideaway in your own room for just $955, or chill out on your backyard patio.
Stay in this awesome “Rowhome” in Philadelphia, where for $832 you can take advantage of a full kitchen, trendy neighborhood, and local attractions like the Philadelphia Museum of Art and historical landmarks.
This one is going to hurt your feelings: for only a little more than the cost of a Mountain View tent, you can stay along the Hawaiian coast in Ewa Beach near Mamala Bay.
