San Francisco Lifestyle Website The Bold Italic ‘Lives’ After April Shutdown

By Alyssa Pereira

After beloved San Francisco lifestyle and news publications The San Francisco Bay Guardian and The Bold Italic abruptly shuttered, many feared that the closure of alt journalism and editorial outlets would quickly become a trend.

Apparently, we mourned too soon.

Although The Bold Italic, previously owned by Gannett Co. Inc., announced its own end in April, it appears that the site has been resurrected.

Previously, contributors were told that the website would go down in early June, meaning they would need to salvage any clips before that date, however, as it turns out, they may not need to worry about it after all.

Sunil Rajarama, co-founder of Scripted, and Sonia Arrison, a “best-selling author” and Board Member of the Thiel Foundation have reportedly bought the site, but have yet to (publicly) reach out to any former editors and staff members.*

What does that mean for the revamped site? If Scripted (a copywriting site) takes the helm, we can probably expect a more socially-driven, aggregated platform, in the vein of Medium or Buzzfeed.

*Edit: we now know that the reincarnated Bold Italic has reached out to “multiple staffers.”
