Attention amateur ghost hunters and alcohol-swizzling history buffs: The Winchester Mystery House just got infinitely more fun.

The storied mansion of Winchester Rifle heiress Sarah Winchester boasts forty bedrooms, winding hallways, and doors leading to nowhere, all because a psychic told her that vengeful spirits killed by her late husband’s rifles would seek her death. Unless, that is, she kept building the house.

After the heiress died, the home became a probably definitely haunted tourist attraction that allows guests to tour the maze of halls, staircases, and hidden rooms.

Pretty soon, that tourist attraction will begin allowing overnight visitors and alcohol sales. On March 5, the San Jose planning department approved a permit allowing the property to welcome guests looking for “those who want the full Winchester Mystery House experience,” according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Now, before you paranormal investigators begin busting out your EMF meters, we need to break some bad news: you won’t be able to sleep in the Winchester House. Instead, the permit was approved to include only certain locations on the site for visitors, like the caretaker’s residence and the foreman’s quarters.

In addition to the new accommodations, The House will also convert its on-site cafe into a fully-fledged restaurant open to all — not just Winchester ticket-holders, and it will serve alcohol. Better yet, alcohol will now be allowed across property grounds (!!).

No word yet on exactly when overnight guests will be able to book — the property will likely need to undergo some kind of construction to keep in line with the new permit — but pretty soon, you might be able to toss it back under a mysteriously swinging chandelier or two.
