In honor of Furious 7 dominating the weekend box office with a $143.6 million domestic debut, we put together a list of the other great car movies of all time.
Just because it is brand spanking new we placed Furious 7 at #22 …
21. Days Of Thunder (1990)
It was basically Top Gun on wheels but still had to be mentioned.
20. Death Race 2000 (1975) and Death Race (2008)
One is old school with David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone and the other is one new school with Jason Statham but they are both pretty cool.
19. The Love Bug (1968)
The 2005 remake with Lindsay Lohan does not exist. I repeat: It never happened. The early sequels are still pretty great especially Herbie Goes Bananas (1980).
18. Duel (1971)
Steven Spielberg classic with a killer tractor trailer.
17. Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006)
“If you’re not first, you’re last.”
Sorry Ricky Bobby, on this list I guess you are last.
16. Blues Brothers (1980)
It is a classic and includes the line “Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don’t fail me now.” The film also demolished over 100 cars during chase scenes.
15. Ronin (1998)
Car chases abound plus a you’ve got Robert Di Nero and the fact the title means rogue Samurai.
14. Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Brought the “drifting” culture to the forefront … for better or worse?
13. Drive (2006)
Ryan Gosling as getaway driver with some crazy car scenes and a bad-ass scorpion jackets.
12. Rush (2013)
Excellent film chronicling the rivalry and friendship between Formula One racers James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
11. Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie as car thieves.
10. Cars (2006) and Cars 2 (2001)
Pixar’s (now Disney’s) animated films about Lightning McQueen and Radiator Springs have grossed over a billion and are good for all ages.
9. All the other Fast and Furious Movies (except the original and Tokyo Drift)
These are all a bit interchangable while getting more and more explosive and a nit more ridiculous (in a good way). 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), and Fast & Furious 6 (2013).
8. The Road Warrior (1981)
What’s better than post-apocalypse Mel Gibson in a fight with gas fiend gangs? The original Mad Max and the third film Mad Max: Beyond The Thunderdome are also pretty epic. Look for the reboot in May from original writer/director George Miller called Mad Max: Fury Road with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.
7. Christine (1983)
It’s a killer car with horror greats John Carpenter and Stephen King behind the wheel.
6. Smokey & The Bandit (1977)
It’s Burt Reynolds and Sally Field chased by Jackie Gleason.
5. The Transporter (2002)
Jason Statham as the mysterious driver and ass kicker … has spawned two sequels and a TV series to date.
4. The Cannonball Run (1981)
Cross country car race with Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore and Farrah Fawcett.
3. American Graffiti (1973)
Lucas film about cruisin’ that launched the career of Harrison Ford.
2. The Fast and The Furious (2001)
The first of the 7 … have to admit that I’ve seen them all!
1. Bullitt (1968)
Steve McQueen and the greatest car chases through the streets of San Francisco.
- The Rock for it one great chase scene.
- Both Italian Job films because a chase scene in a Mini Cooper is pretty cool.
- Driven … it’s Sly’s version of Days Of Thunder
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
