Angelina Jolie Removed Her Ovaries So Her Kids Would Never Have to Say, ‘Mom Died of Ovarian Cancer’

By Shannon Carlin

Angelina Jolie Pitt has made a big move to keep herself alive and hopes it will help save other women.

In an op-ed in the New York Times, Jolie shared her “Diary of a Surgery” detailing her decision to have preventive surgery to remove both her ovaries and her fallopian tubes to lessen her chance of getting ovarian cancer, which her mother, Micheline Bertrand died of in 2007 at 56 years old.

The biggest factor being that she carries a mutation in the BRAC1 gene that gives her a 50 percent risk of developing ovarian cancer. This procedure forces a woman into menopause and Jolie will now take hormone replacements.

“I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes,” she said. “But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”

Adding, “It is not easy to make these decisions but it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.”

Jolie does make it clear that this drastic decision is not for everyone and that there are other options such as alternative medicine.

“The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally,” she wrote.
