It’s a rare feline that acknowledges the livelihood (let alone presence) of anyone else in the world, and yet, once in a while, a cat shocks people with its utterly heroic antics.

Meet Masha. Masha is a long-haired tabby who lives in Russia as a communal neighborhood cat (meaning, local residents feed her and collectively take care of her).

“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” said nearby resident Irna Lavora. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

When Masha encountered the baby in a box, as residents told the news, she covered him to keep him warm, saving him from the freezing winter temperatures.

“Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child,” Larova explained, before adding that everyone in the neighborhood has since been stuffing the hero cat full of her favorite foods.

The baby, (who you can see here in pictures acquired by the New York Post), is alive and well, thanks to Masha.
