Back In Black is one of the latest year round craft beer offerings from San Francisco’s famed 21st Amendment Brewing Company.

I picked up a six pack of 21st Amendment’s Back In Black frankly for two reasons. First, the name — I have and always will be a fan of AC/DC both with Bon Scott and Brian Johnson. Second, the concept was intriguing — a black pale ale.

The traditional IPA or India Pale Ale was first brewed in 19th century England and is generally a pale beer with more hops than other varieties of beer. 21st Amendment’s Back In Black, a black pale ale, is totally different beer all together. According to their official site Back In Black is, “[b]rewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.”

The taste:

I can only describe the flavor of Back In Black as a cross between a dark porter and a IPA. The beer is light when it hits the taste buds with a malty finish. There is a nice balance between what could be two vastly different beer types. Back In Black is both hoppy with citrus flavors while also creamy with malt and coffee under-notes.

The can:

The can keeps the beer exceptionally cold and makes for a great barbecue beer as it chills quicker than a glass bottle in a cooler. Additionally, the can makes it lighter and more portable.

The label:

The label depicts a very kick-ass illustration of Paul Revere making his historical ride. 21st Amendment boast that the beer itself is “Inspired by Paul Revere‚Äôs midnight ride.” The twist? The American revolutionary is on the back of a motorcycle not on horseback.

And now a little AC/DC …
