‘Godzilla’ Tears Through Weekend Box Office Ranks

By Alyssa Pereira

Godzilla, the monster movie remake starring Aaron Johnson, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsenearned one of the highest box office debuts so far this year. The film, which was touted as more of a disaster film than a monster movie, ranked second in highest grossing for its opening weekend (the first is Captain America, which took in $95 million). Analysts attribute its success to its creative marketing—it was advertised as focusing more on the impact of a large scale destruction than a kitschy monster movie, and it also implied that it starred Bryan Cranston, which as it turned out, was a bit misleading.

Neighbors continues to do well at the box office, despite a fall of about 47%. The profit still keep the flick on track to gross around $150 million.

Another premiere, Million Dollar Arm, starring “Mad Men”‘s Jon Hamm, took in a diminutive $10.5 million. For reference, Moneyball took in $19.5 million its opening weekend.
