If you were betting that The Amazing Spider-Man would stay on top of the box office ranks this week, well, we have some bad news for you. Neighbors, the original comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron blew the superhero classic out of the water this week, by about $14 million dollars.
Neighbors opened in 3,279 locations to one of the biggest debuts in recent history. Though it trailed the successes of Ted and Sex & the City, it trumped comedy heavyweights like The Hangover and 21 Jump Street. Critics attribute its success to a relatable, clearly articulated plotline and aggressive marketing efforts, and a surprising draw from a female audience base—the film’s attendees were 53% female. We’re pretty sure it had something to do with this.
Spider-Man plummeted this week domestically, but it is still doing well overseas. Over here it fell 59%, which is actually fairly standard a drop for superhero flicks as of late. However, with Godzilla and X-Men set to release in the next couple weeks, it might be a bumpy ride for Spider-Man.
Moms’ Night Out, which premiered this week, was decently received at just over $4 million—a modest profit for a film premiering at only about 1,000 theaters. Legends of Oz, for example in comparison, bombed—though it played in over 2,500 theaters, it brought in only about $3,700,000.
