According to the Hollywood Reporter, A Mrs. Doubtfire sequel is indeed in the works, and Robin Williams has already signed on to star. The script will reportedly be written by David Berenbaum (who wrote Elf), and Chris Columbus, who directed the original film, will also be involved. No word yet on whether the sequel will also take place in San Francisco (but we’re hoping it will be!).
The first Mrs. Doubtfire was released a full 21 years ago via Fox Century Pictures, and the sequel has more or less been in the works since 2001, when Bonnie Hunt was tapped to write the script. Ultimately, the project sort of died, but when Berenbaum signed on at the beginning of this year it began to look like the tides were changing.
Not everyone is on board though. Mara Wilson of the original film (Wilson played Nattie) tweeted a few things about the sequel.
In any case, we’re still looking forward to it!
