Today is April Fool’s Day, or as many know it, the worst day to be using the internet. Jokes are everywhere, and like this weird clip of LeBron rapping to a Kanye song that surfaced today, it’s hard to distinguish the real news from the pranks.

Pop artists are in the position of having many, many people watching what they’re doing at all times, and on this day, they certainly like to take advantage of that.

We rounded up some of the best, most epic April Fool’s Day pranks ever played by some of your favorites, including The Flaming Lips, David Bowie, Coldplay and more. Check them out below.
1. Justin Bieber vs. TMZ

Even if you’re not a diehard #belieber, you have to admit, this prank had style.

Gossip site TMZ has long made Bieber the butt of jokes and the subject of some not-so-nice stories. On April Fool’s Day last year, the Biebs exacted his revenge—by posting a tweet, reading “As promised taking all fan phone calls TODAY at (888) 847-9869. Talk to u soon!”

It would all seem very sweet, were it not actually TMZ’s tip line. Droves of fans flooded the call lines of TMZ’s offices, which would have been in good fun if it wasn’t a toll-free line. TMZ’s offices had to foot the bill for a very expensive, very annoying day.

2. SONY Announces headphones for cats

Last year, SONY released this ridiculous campaign offering a new line of headphones for pets, called Animalia. The video (above) accompanies this text:

“We’re stoked to introduce our first-ever line of technology products specially designed and created for pets. The Animalia lineup includes Sony-branded products targeted at owners with dogs, cats and hamsters such as the K9 4K TV, M3-OW Kitty Cans, and In-Cage Speakers. Watch this video for an exclusive overview.”

Pretty cute, SONY.

3. The Flaming Lips release companion to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon

A couple days ago, the Flaming Lips began what was probably the most elaborate prank in music this year—creating a partner album to the legendary Dark Side of the Moon. While the album that they did actually release indeed does complement Dark Side of the Moon, it was never meant to be taken seriously. It was all an elaborate ruse orchestrated by humor site, and today they released the videos to prove it.

That’s not all though—they even released this silly article in The New Yorker.

4. Refinery29 90s Revival show

Fashion blog Refinery29 played “What if?” earlier today by posting this poster for a pretend music fest.

Could you imagine if it was REAL though?

5. Jack White Teams Up with…Tilda Swinton?

Australia’s The Beat posted a year ago today that Jack White would be enlisting the help of Tilda Swinton, critically-acclaimed actress and “other biological sister” to join the White Stripes as a drummer, stating,

“‘The White Stripes are, and always have been, me and my sister. Now The White Stripes with my other biological sister, Tilda Swinton.’  Swinton adds, speaking from a glass box at MOMA, ‘White’s roots are routed to the crossroads. Crossroads can reveal themselves to be mobius. And here we are, re-routed to the roots of Jack White as he rediscovers his roots.'”

White was no doubt poking fun at the misconception that (now) ex-wife Meg White was actually his sister. In any case, it was pretty funny.

6. David Bowie to Open a Pet Shop

Last year, Clash Magazine posted that David Bowie would be opening a pet shop called “The Spiders from Mars.”

Said the article, “Named ‘The Spiders From Mars’ the shop – set to open in New York – will seemingly concentrate on arachnids. ‘Oh Dave’s a massive fan of spiders’ our source continued. ‘They’re just like him: skeletal creatures of the night who don’t release albums very often.'”

They also offered a mock-up of the new storefront, which actually linked to this.

7. Coldplay Releases Signature Fragrance

Four years ago, Coldplay unleashed this crazy release unto the world, saying that the band would begin to sell their signature fragrance. The cologne, called “Angst,” accompanied this statement by Chris Martin:

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said the band’s frontman, Chris Martin. “People like to smell nice and we thought we could help them out.”

It also came with this picture:

And at only 42 British pounds, this cologne could supposedly have been yours. Too bad it was a prank.

8. Radiohead and Ted Nugent to collaborate on pro-hunting musical

Last year, The Guardian reported Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and Ted Nugent would collaborate on a new play adaptation of the supposed children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, with a surprise ending. The article said:

“The pair worked on the music for We’re Going on a Bear Hunt for three weeks late last year, and Yorke was apparently receptive to Nugent’s suggested changes to the plot. ‘In the story, right, these kids go looking for this huge momma grizzly, and when they find it, they just run,’ the source said. ‘Nuge and Thom reckoned it would be more fun if the kids just pulled out some serious firepower and blew the damn bear away – then skinned it and brought the hide home to their folks. Nuge thought Thom would be pinko about it, but Thom thought it was hilarious.'”
