When the opening ceremony at the Sochi Winter Olympic games gets underway Friday night don’t be surprised if the paint on the podium is still wet.

Reports and tweets from journalists arriving in the resort town, are pretty grim. The $50 billion Olympic Village is not finished. There are still construction zones at the site and huge cranes are still parked all over town.

Even worse are the accommodations. The hotels are not finished and those that are have broken elevators, missing doorknobs, no running water — one journalist tweeted, “my hotel has no lobby.” Another journalist was shocked when he walked in his room and found a large amount bodily fluid on the bed. Apparently someone had just had sex on it.

Someone shared a photo of what was coming out of the tap at one hotel. It looked more like a urine sample than anything you’d drink.

Then, there are the dogs. Apparently, there are hundreds of stray dogs everywhere. Many of them end up in hotel rooms. After Russian authorities hired a pest removal company to exterminate them, a local billionaire stepped in and is trying to rescue them. He is creating a shelter that will vaccinate the dogs in hopes that some of the Games’ visitors will consider adopting one.

Finally, there are the photos of side-by-side toilet facilities. Officials have downplayed the communal, twin toilets but have yet to confirm whether they were built by design, or in error.
