I get really depressed, in my day-to-day life, by the news.
So much so that I’ve often asked my colleagues at all-news stations how they process the sadness they report on each day, and how they manage to not let it bring them down all the time. I genuinely want to know ’cause I wanna use their tricks.
Almost every single person I’ve ever asked says the same thing; “I remind myself that it’s NEWS – the bad stuff is less common, which makes it newsworthy.” They remind themselves that more good things happen than bad things – because good things happen all the time, they’re not as newsworthy by definition.
I do think that’s a good thing to keep in mind…and I try to remember it… but I also gravitate completely to the Good Things stories that do make the news!
Some of them are straight up joy, some of them are bittersweet and the result of people making the best out of bad situations. Either way, they’re stories about who we all are as people – and how we treat each other.
