The theme of this year’s Cinequest “Unleash” has an air of whimsical possibility. Having attended Cinequest in year’s past, it has consistently provided a cinematic extravaganza, where anything could happen. The film I attended tonight, “The Sapphires”, fits under the thematic umbrella.
Showing in the historical San Jose landmark, the California Theatre, easily the most beautiful venue in San Jose. Wondrous to all willing to suspend a night in disbelief. The front halls felt like walking into a cathedral, with art work too meticulous to mention.
The crowd participation in the theatre was unparalleled. Viewers were laughing and clapping along to the lighthearted comedy and soul music of the movie, making it impossible to not be involved emotionally. Any music aficionado who collected mo-town records would be chomping at the bit get their sticky little fingers on this sound track.
I was weary at first at the lightheartedness of a movie taking on racism, the Australian class system and the Vietnam War. The unraveling of the underlying romance amplifies these themes and it gets real fast. And whether you don’t know to laugh, shed a tear, raise your fist in anger, or sing you are amorously clapping at the end.
