SAN JOSE (ALICE@97.3) – British filmmaker, Sally Potter’s “Ginger and Rosa” was the kick-off movie for this year’s Cinequest Film Festival at the California Theatre in San Jose. As my best friend and I waited in line to enter the theater, an overwhelming excitement filled the room, thanks to the red carpet, cameras flashing and the numerous celebrities being interviewed. In particular, celebrities like Ian Harding of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” and Jessalyn Gilsig of Fox’s “Glee.” The festival truly felt like a Hollywood setting.

“Ginger & Rosa” stars Alice Englert of “Beautiful Creatures” and Elle Fanning from “We Bought A Zoo” also, sister to Daktota Fanning. The movie also stars Christina Hendricks, Annette Bening, Oliver Platt and Timothy Spall of “The King’s Speech” and the “Harry Potter” series.

As we walked into the theater where the movie was being played, an orchestra entertained the audience, but shortly was silenced as the introductions to the festival sponsors were announced. “Ginger and Rosa” began after the introductions. The film is set in the 1960’s with the two main characters, Ginger (Englert) and Rosa (Fanning) as inseparable best friends that grew up together. Rosa is the rebel child, loves to smoke, make out with boys and get into trouble. While Ginger tries very hard to be like Rosa, has a hard time marching to her own beat, but enjoys writing and wants to save the world. Throughout the movie their friendship revolves around the threats of the Cuban Missile Crisis and a devastating event that ended their relationship.

Despite the films’ slow start and the somewhat difficulty to understand the characters and where they were coming from, I enjoyed “Ginger & Rosa.” The film has a good message about friendship and forgiveness. There was a sense of connection from each of the characters and the difficult challenges they faced.
