The aircraft carrier Hornet CV-12 is the 8th ship in the US Navy to have that name…the first chip christened Hornet was in 1775 and over the years has had a distinguished naval record.

When the current Hornet was decommissioned, it sat idle for a while…then a group of supporters raised money and awareness and saved her from the scrap yard to become the USS Hornet Museum that is in Alameda.

The Stem program teaches young people Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with hands on opportunities.

The ship is open for tours for school kids as well as anyone who is interested in the war-time and peace time missions of the Hornet.

The Hornet was the ship that picked up the crews of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 after they splashed down int he ocean, so it was the first stop for the first men who walked on the moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren.

On February 2nd, the Hornet will host Grey Ghost Paranormal Conference & History Mystery overnight.

Heidi Schave is the education manager on the USS Hornet Museum.
