January is National Mentoring Month. Friends for Youth, headquartered in Redwood City and Serving San Mateo County and Northern Santa Clara County, matches mentors and young people between the ages of 8 and 17. The Mentor and mentee spend at least three hours a week together for a year doing whatever they find fun and interesting.

Friends for Youth has a waiting list of about 60 kids…you could make a big difference in someone’s life by becoming a mentor. You have to be at least 20 years old and willing to spend three hours each week for a year with the young person.

Although the organization matches mentors and young people for one year, many of the matches stay in touch and continue meeting, sometimes monthly or several times a year, for many many years!

Jonathan Cowgill is the Mentoring Services Recruitment Coordinator for Friends for Youth.
