Monique Truong’s “Bitter in the Mouth”

Monique Truong left South Vietnam when she was 6. She and her mother were placed in a refugee camp at Camp Pendleton, California, until they found a sponsor family that helped them settle in North Carolina. Monique’s father then joined them. Monique’s feeling that she was “different” or “other” stayed with her as she grew up and influences her writing.
