The city of San Francisco was officially incorporated on April 16th, 1850. The fledgling city faced a lot more than budget shortfall back in the day. The huge issues involved the city’s propensity to burn down (according to history the City burned down over 6 times in the 1850s) and the lack of public sewer or water system. Here are a few interesting facts about early San Francisco:
- 1st Mayor was John W. Geary who Geary St. and Blvd. are named after. He was also the first Postmaster for San Francisco. Later he became governor of Kansas and was twice elected governor of Pennsylvania.
- Population in 1850 was 94,766 (today’s is over 800,000)
- Major Industry was mining and shipping
- Bars closed at Midnight
- Residents by law needed to have at least 6 water buckets for fire prevention.
Now it is from a bit later but check out one of the oldest know35mm films below … it’s San Francisco in 1905/06.
